Days after a 21-year-old Delhi University student committed suicide at her residence in New Chandrawal area in North Delhi claiming that she was harassed by her boyfriend Ved Prakash, Ved Prakash on Wednesday surrendered at the Tis Hazari Court following which he was arrested by the Roop Nagar police.
According to the police, on April 9, the girl hanged herself to death and had left behind a two and half page suicide note mentioning that Ved Prakash has cheated her and established physical relationship with her on the pretext of marriage. She had also claimed that she had approached the local police about the atrocities committed by Ved Prakash but the police allegedly did not help her.
Delhi Police on Wednesday said that they have arrested Ved Prakash under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code at the Roop Nagar police station.
On April 8, the 21-year-old girl along with her brother had approached the Roop Nagar police station complaining that she has been sexually assaulted by Ved Prakash. As per the written complaint, the rape took place while she was living with the accused in Model Town area. accordingly, the girl was asked to go and register a formal complaint at the Model Town police station.
A senior police officer had said that based on the girl’s complaint, a case under section 376 of the IPC was registered.
In the meantime, the Roop Nagar police station which had registered a case against Ved Prakash at the behest of the complaint given by the girl’s brother was looking out for him at Bihar, Bokaro and Kolkata. The police was putting pressure on the parents of Ved Prakash to surrender to the police.
Following this, Ved Prakash accompanied by his advocate surrendered at the Tis Hazari court and was subsequently arrested.
