A 38-year-old woman in Faridabad killed herself by consuming acid on Wednesday night after she got to know that her daughter was reportedly being blackmailed by a man. Shortly afterwards, her daughter, a Class XII student, too consumed acid. She is now recuperating in a hospital.
The incident took place in Sanjay Enclave and the deceased has been identified as Santosh, who lived with her daughter Deepa. Deepa has filed a complaint against Ramesh, an auto driver, who was smitten with her and would stalk her as she went to school.
According to a senior police official, Deepa is a student of Himalaya School. While she studied in Balaji School last year, Ramesh was would ferry her. “Ramesh expressed his feelings and with the help of one of her friends, managed to get her mobile number. After getting the number, he started calling her every now and then and started pressing her for marriage. He also clicked some photos and used them to threaten and blackmail her” the official said.
Deepa did not share the incident with her mother. About 10 days back, when the she was not at home, a call made by Ramesh was attended by her mother. Ramesh repeated his demand of marrying the girl and told Santosh that he would make photos of him and her daughter public. The mother got upset over this threat and, fearing the social stigma if the photos got out, consumed acid.
“When Deepa came to know what her mother had done, she too consumed the remaining acid from the bottle used by her mother. While Santosh was admitted to Escorts Hospital in a serious condition, Deepa was admitted to the BK Hospital nearby. Santosh eventually succumbed to her burns,” the official added.
Deepa’s condition is said to be out of danger and doctors say she will recover soon.
