BJP's slap on the wrist: Tie rakhi, get onions free

The Opposition BJP in Delhi is sparing no effort to cash in on the soaring prices of onion in the Capital. While the party has already been selling the edible bulb at discounted prices, its leaders have decided to gift two kilo onions to women on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan in the JJ camps located near the official residences of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Delhi BJP leader Sunil Yadav said he would distribute two kilo onions each to the women who tie the sacred thread on his wrist. He would be visiting the JJ camp on Tughlak lane, located behind the official residence of Rahul Gandhi and Race Course Road jhuggi camp near the PM residence at 11 am on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Delhi BJP has decided to sell onions at the rates prevailing in the wholesale market from the 280 locations in the city from Wednesday.

Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said a stall would be set up at Talkatora Stadium on Tuesday where UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi would launch the food security programme. Goel said the party would sell onions at Rs 25 per kilo, a far more subsidised rate than the current market value. Reacting to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s accusation of the BJP politicising the issue, Goel said that had the government been sincere in its efforts, the people of Delhi would not have had to suffer this way. He also termed the Food Security Scheme a political gimmick ahead of the assembly elections and announced plans to stage a demonstration outside Talkatora Stadium.
