BJP to pull the great switcheroo

BJP to pull the great switcheroo

The Delhi BJP is set to undergo a major organisational reshuffle in the post election scenario. Delhi BJP president Dr Harsh Vardhan said a work audit will be conducted within the party following which the ‘performers’ will be rewarded. The restructuring will also be done keeping in view party’s prospects in the re-elections to the Delhi Assembly which is now imminent with all major parties advocating for fresh polls. “Restructuring of the Delhi unit is very much on my mind. We will assess the performance of party’s workers and office bearers. The performers will be certainly rewarded,” said Vardhan.

Constituting a new team of office bearers assumes greater significance in wake of speculations that Vardhan might find a ministerial berth at the Centre. In such a scenario, he will have to step down as Delhi BJP president and thus, kickstarting the race for the new State unit president too. However, sources said, Vardhan would be keen on having a team of his own trusted lieutenants when the party goes to re-polls which, sources said, might take place during October-November this year. Senior Delhi BJP leaders including Harsh Vardhan also met BJP national president Rajnath Singh on Monday. It is understood that the leaders discussed the viability of the re-elections in Delhi.

It is noteworthy here that Vardhan has been continuing with the same organisational team that was formed by his predecessor Vijay Goel. Vardhan, who took over as Delhi BJP president in February this year, did not interfere with the team of office bearers and decided to go to polls with the same. Sources said some of Vardhan’s confidants may be promoted and assigned bigger roles in the organisation ahead of the elections. Vardhan also made it clear that the ‘non-performers’ and ‘indisciplined’ party workers and leaders will have to face the music as he maintained that party discipline was supreme. He was referring to the cross-voting by BJP councillors during election for Mayor and Deputy Mayor in South Delhi Municipal Corporation last month. While the BJP

managed to win the Mayor’s election by just one vote, it lost the Deputy Mayor’s post to

the Congress.

“The non-performers in the party will be penalised. We have begun investigation into the alleged cross-voting in South Delhi Corporations. If any concrete name surfaces, action will be taken against him. Indiscipline within the party will not be tolerated,” Vardhan said.
