BJP promises watchdog commission

With corruption being BJP’s main poll plank, the Delhi BJP on Sunday announced to set up an Accountability Commission which would act as a watchdog against corruption in the State.

The Commission, according to the party, will affix responsibilities for all the corruption that took place during the previous Government as well as the current Government. The announcement is being seen as an offset to Aam Aadmi Party’s Jan lokpal that was envisaged as a tool to check graft.

The BJP’s announcement also comes in wake of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit challenging the Opposition to provide proof of corruption in her Government or stop making baseless charges.

“The Accountability Commission will ensure that all those who have looted taxpayers’ money are brought to book. No one will be spared if they have indulged in any kind of corruption,” Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said. Alleging ‘massive corruption’ in Delhi Government, he said all those involved in wrongdoing will be taken to task if people of the Capital make BJP victorious in the December 4 election.

“The need has arisen due to the continuous negation of facts by the Government and her Ministers. The Delhi Government has been indicted by at least one and at times more than one of the premier constitutional bodies such as CAG, Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and lokayukta but still the Chief Minister is asking for proof of corruption,” Goel alleged.

“The BJP will not let the Congress get away with the loot at the cost of taxpayers. Our endeavour will be not only to indict the guilty but to retrieve the money to the State exchequer which will be used for welfare schemes,” he said.

Goel also alleged that a number of schemes such as Rajiv Ratna Awas Yojana for offering low-cost housing to the poor were announced by Delhi Government and money was charged but nothing was delivered. “Such cases will be looked into and action will be taken against those responsible for misleading common people. Several cases of irregularities such as transport scam, Yamuna cleaning scam, slum rehabilitation scam, ration card scam which have been swept under the carpet will be taken to their logical conclusion. No one, however, influential, will be spared if he or she has done anything wrong and betrayed the trust and faith of the common people,” the BJP president said.

Indicating that BJP will initiate probe into CWG irregularities, Goel said the Commission will look into all recommendations of lokayukta, PAC and CAG into various alleged bungling in the last 15 years.“The Accountability Commission will go into all the recommendations of lokayukta, PAC and CAG during 15 years of Congress rule. It will also go into records of the Delhi Government’s Anti-Corruption Bureau and Vigilance wing. The Accountability Commission will be a permanent watchdog and will ensure that whoever may be in power should be held accountable. This will cleanse the administration of corruption, make it more efficient and people friendly,” he added.
