BJP primed for Accountability Comm in civic bodies

Coming clean on the issue of corruption, the Delhi BJP on Friday announced the establishment of the Accountability Commission in the three Municipal Corporations in Delhi, even as it dared the Congress to introduce the same in Delhi Government.

The political leadership in three civic bodies led by Delhi BJP President Vijay Goel, met lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, seeking to initiate the implementation of the Commission. Goel reiterated that BJP would set up the watchdog committee in Delhi Government if it was voted to power. He said that he has written to the Mayors of the three Municipal Corporations regarding setting up of the  Commission and the respective Municipal Commissioners have also been asked to prepare a report on the same.

Requesting Jung to initiate the process, the BJP cited a number of failed projects of the Delhi Government and said that the Commission would take care of the responsibilities of the Government. These included Munak Canal, Signature Bridge, BRT Corridor, CWG scam, Mono Rail, creation of new hospitals and cleaning the Yamuna, among others. “Thousands of crores have been wasted by the Government in the name of development but the projects have failed to materialise. Delhi is yet to get water from Haryana despite spending Rs 440 crore on the establishment of Munak Canal. Similarly, cost escalation of Signature Bridge, scrapping of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, wasting crores during Commonwealth Games and cleaning of Yamuna are some of the examples of UPA’s poor planning,” Goel alleged.

The Delhi BJP chief said that when his party demanded formation of the Commission, Ministers of Delhi Government challenged them if they could implement it in BJP-ruled Municipal Corporations. “I challenge the Delhi Government that we will be appointing the Accountability Commission and we are waiting to see if the Congress could do the same in Delhi,” he said, adding that people would benefit with such a Commission. Goel accused the Congress Government of delaying projects such as the Mono Rail and establishment of new hospitals.

“The Commission should look into all the cases of corruption and irregularities in delivering services to the people during the past 15 years,” Goel said. Goel said the Commission should be a statutory body to look into the complaints or irregularities pointed out by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Vigilance Commission and the lokayukta.
