BJP picks up slack after demurral

The eight-month long indecisiveness within the BJP has left its Delhi unit scuffling to make a fresh start for poll preparations in the national Capital. The poll plank for the Delhi BJP will be based on Central policy of the party, said sources. While the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had been demanding re-elections already, seems well-prepared to face the upcoming battle, the Delhi unit of the saffron party has pulled up its socks for intensive and expansive electioneering while cashing in on the Modi wave along with the twin wins in Maharashtra and Haryana.

The party, on Tuesday, held a meeting with its legislators where it was decided that it would fight the elections on national issues like development, inflation and corruption. Foreseeing the lack of time to prepare, the party cadre has been asked to do a district-wise preparation within 10 days. Besides, MlAs, MPs, councillors and other workers were also advised to expedite the process of meeting people and launch an intensive social media campaign. “The policies of the BJP at the Centre will be our poll plank. To reach out to the roots of the voters, workers have been instructed to begin booth preparations in full swing,” said a senior BJP leader.

“Our MlAs are ready for fresh polls and we will fight under a collective leadership,” said Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay while welcoming the Union Cabinet’s recommendation to dissolve the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday. “Candidates, issues and strategy would be decided under collective leadership, and would not be the decision of an individual,” he said. The decision over the candidature of legislators would be purely based on winnability and approach among masses, he added.

He, however, refused to name the party’s chief ministerial candidate for Delhi, and pressed upon that the party would contest elections under the face of ‘lotus.’ Asked if Upadhyay would contest elections, he said, “I am a trustee of the party. I would do as directed by the senior leaders.” The party would do critical analysis of the candidates and would take decisions based on conditions prevailing, repetitions, weakness and repair, the chief added.

It asserts that it would bank upon the ‘trust’ of the voters and promise ‘good governance’ to them, which they lost during 15 years of Congress rule and 49 days of AAP governance. The party would also take up issues of unauthorised colonies, water, power, women security, corruption, youth, unemployment, traffic, health and Yamuna in its manifesto.
