The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has put road transport and traffic management in the national Capital as one of its priorities. Releasing its Delhi-centric manifesto for the April 10 lok Sabha Polls in the Capital, the BJP on Wednesday said a centralised traffic plan will be devised to get the city rid of persistent traffic woes. According to the proposal, the most congested stretches in the city will be identified and provision for alternate routes will be made in a time-bound manner. Besides, the party said, Delhi roads will be made pedestrian and cycle-friendly.
The BJP plans to restrict the entry of such traffic into the city which crosses through Delhi to go to other destinations. This will be done by expediting the completion of Western Express Highway connecting Kundli, Manesar and Palwal and the Eastern Express Highway connecting Sonepat, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.
“The peripheral expressways will be completed within six months if the BJP is voted to power. With the express highways becoming operational, the vehicles travelling between UP, Haryana and other adjoining states will not have to pass trough the national Capital. This will not only decongest the city roads to great extent but also bring down the pollution level in the city,” said Delhi BJP president Dr Harsh Vardhan.
Another key feature of the BJP manifesto is introduction of the long-pending monorail. The BJP plans to make the monorail system complimentary with the existing Delhi Metro network. The number of coaches in Delhi Metro trains will also be increased to address the problem of overcrowding.
To ensure last-mile connectivity to lakhs of public transport users in the capital, the BJP said all modes of public transport will be integrated. These include Metro rail, DTC buses, Metro feeder buses and ring railway. A common ticketing system like in other countries will also be introduced so as to cause facilitate the commuters. In addition to this, the BJP said it will introduce 5,000 new DTC buses to meet the requirement. The BJP also promised an integrated transport system for public transport in Delhi and NCR as well as neighbouring cities of Faridabad, Meerut, Gurgaon, Sonepat, Rohtak, Indirapuram, Ghaziabad and Noida.
