BJP loses 5 candidates, hands lotus to 5 Independents

Faced with the spectre of five of its candidates being disqualified by the State Election Commission on technical grounds, the BJP on Tuesday allotted “lotus” symbol to five Independents to contest municipal polls. Welcoming the candidates, Delhi BJP in-charge Shyam Jaju said, the BJP has decided to support the independent candidates in the five wards who expressed their desire to join the BJP and found their political approach adhering to ours.

Twinkle Kalia, lata Soni, Rahul Singh, Gulfam and Amrita Rashmi will fight on the BJP symbol. All these independent candidates will contest from Kishanganj, Abu Fazal Enclave, Vinod Nagar and lado Sarai wards respectively..

Jaju alleged that nominations of five BJP candidates were cancelled as the returning officers were pressurised by the Delhi Government. The Delhi High Court had reinstated the nomination of one candidate but the nomination of five BJP candidates were rejected on frivolous grounds.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers, who was working under Vinod Vats, the Member of National Executive, also joined the BJP. “Around 38 active AAP workers have joined BJP today,” said Jaju.  These workers were office bearers of various cells of the AAP party, he added.

Jagmohan Sharma, Ajay Saini, Sunil Dagar, Navratna Sharma and Nisha have joined the party.

Jaju further said that just like the people of other parts of the country, the people in Delhi are also connecting with the agenda of development of BJP. “Elections have been held in many States for municipal corporations and assemblies after the demonetisation and everywhere BJP emerged victorious and now BJP will repeat that performance in Delhi also,” he added.
