BJP cries foul over rally venue denial

The State BJP on Thursday accused the Delhi Government and the Centre of misusing Government machinery to deny its PM candidate, Narendra Modi, permission to hold a rally in the New Delhi constituency.

The BJP had sought permission at either of the places among Sarojini Nagar, laxmibai Nagar, RK Puram and Parliament Street, but after days of dilly-dallying, the Delhi Police allowed the BJP to hold the rally at Jantar Mantar. However, the BJP refused the offer. Modi was to address a rally in support of BJP candidate Vijender Gupta, who is pitched against Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit from the New Delhi constituency.

“First, the administration denied permission to Modi’s November 30 rally in New Delhi saying the desired places were already booked. later, police also denied permission for his rally on December 1 citing vague reasons. Finally, it allowed us to hold the rally at Jantar Mantar, which was unacceptable to the BJP. This forced us to cancel his rally in the constituency,” said Anil Jain,

BJP national secretary and convener of public meetings and rallies for Delhi Assembly polls. Jain alleged that it was done at the behest of the Centre and the State Government to prevent Narendra Modi from addressing a rally in the constituency of Sheila Dikshit, fearing the tremendous public support he has been receiving at his public meetings.

“It is a deliberate attempt by the Government and a clear misuse of its machinery. The BJP had even agreed upon organising the rally at Parliament Street, but that too was denied. This shows the motive of the Congress party. The Congress fears the groundswell support for Modi and the BJP,” he alleged.

With this, Modi will be addressing four more rallies in the Capital — three on November 30 and the last one on December 1. On Saturday, Modi will address rallies in Shahdara, Chandni Chowk and Sultanpuri, while on December 1, he will be addressing a rally at Virat Cinema ground in Ambedkar Nagar. This is the same venue where Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had held a rally last week, but had failed to draw sizeable gathering.
