BJP cries foul over inflammatory texts

Former Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta on Thursday met Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi and submitted a written complaint alleging circulation

of malicious text messages to instigate riots in the country on day of counting of votes. Gupta met Bassi at Police Headquarters in the afternoon and requested him to initiate an inquiry into the matter and book those behind the SMS campaign.“This is to bring to your notice that a malicious SMS campaign is being run to disseminate fear among the minority community and to instigate riots in the country on May 16,” Gupta said in his complaint. He has also submitted texts of some of the alleged inflammatory SMSs in his complaint.

Several media commentators and noted Indian academicians have warned on social media of such messages being spread to create an atmosphere of communal tension through rumour mongering. “As it could be seen that tone and tenor of the message text is highly pernicious and is meant to create fear psychosis among one particular community. These messages clearly indicate that the leader of one particular political party is being vilified and used at the hands of anti-nationals to provoke people of minority community to incite violence,” added Gupta in his complaint.
