Candidates from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have filed the nominations and entered the contest on Friday for the key posts of Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the standing committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), ahead of the elections scheduled for June 12, 2025.
From the BJP, Satya Sharma has filed her nomination for the post of Chairperson, while Sunder Singh has filed for the post of Deputy Chairperson. Representing AAP, Praveen Kumar has submitted his nomination for Chairperson and Mohini Jeenwal for Deputy Chairperson.
The nominations were filed at the office of the Municipal Secretary at the Civic Centre in central Delhi. Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh and Leader of the House in the MCD Pravesh Wahi were also present during the nomination process.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Singh said, “It was a matter of happiness that the Standing Committee is finally being formed. In the absence of the committee, many important development plans could not be prepared. Now, all members will work together to provide better civic services to the people of Delhi,”
The Standing Committee is one of the most powerful bodies in the MCD. It is responsible for making important decisions related to finances, projects, tenders and everyday civic work such as roads, sanitation, parks, and more. Over the past few months, work had slowed down in the absence of the committee.
The formation of the Standing Committee is expected to accelerate key development and administrative initiatives in the Capital that had been delayed due to the committee’s non-
functioning status.
The upcoming elections are likely to see a close fight between the BJP and AAP. While the BJP currently holds the Mayor’s post, the AAP has significant strength in the House.
According to officials, the nominations will now be verified, and preparations for the elections will continue. The results on June 12 will decide who leads the Standing Committee for the coming term.
Currently, the BJP holds a majority in the House with 117 councillors, overtaking AAP, which had won 134 seats in the 2022 MCD elections but now stands at 97 due to — defections, the election of some members to the Delhi Assembly, and the formation of the Indraprastha Vikas Party by 16 councillors. The Congress has eight members.
