A 27-year-old businessman suffered bullet wounds as four armed assailants robbed Rs32.5 lakh from a SIM card distributor in North-East Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar area on Monday.

Police said the injured, identified as Rohit Aggarwal, had tried to nab one of the assailants but was shot at. He has been admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.

According to police, the incident happened outside the Kabir Nagar branch of Corporation Bank around 12.15 pm on Monday. Four men wearing helmet came on two motorcycles and snatched the two bags containing Rs32.5 lakh cash from Manish Goel, who runs a distribution firm of SIM cards of two mobile phone companies and Parle-G biscuits.

Goel had come to deposit the money in the bank with Devender Singh, his associate, in a Hyundai i10 car. After snatching the bag, the attacker also fired seven rounds in the air.

“While escaping, one of the robbers fell off the motorcycle. It was then that a passerby (Rohit Aggarwal) tried to get hold of him but the assailant opened fire and one of the bullets hit Rohit in the flank,” said a police officer.

The assailants managed to flee from the spot after which Manish Goel made a call to the police and Rohit was rushed to the hospital. Doctors said due to excess bleeding, the condition of Rohit was critical but stable.

Goel, who is a resident of Arya Nagar in North Delhi’s sabzi mandi, has been running the distribution firm for the past five years. Police said he had come to the bank to deposit collection of Saturday and Sunday, which was about Rs32.5 lakh.
