Biogas plant in Punjabi Bagh first to install net metering

Published on:

South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s (SDMC) decentralised waste processing biogas plant established at Punjabi Bagh has become the first plant to install net metering. The plant generates approximately 800 units of electricity and around 800 kilograms organic manure per day.

The net metering concept was successfully implemented in rooftop solar till now; this is for the first time wherein a bio gas based decentralized waste to energy project is working on the same concept, the official said, adding that it allows the plant to store the overproduced electricity in a grid and when the plant is under-producing; the stored power can be used to meet the requirement.

The bio-methanation plant called - ‘Yasasu Green’ was inaugurated by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal in February this year to manage and process a large quantity of waste produced in the national Capital.

A senior SDMC official said that Delhi generates 10,000-ton waste every day and it has become a daunting challenge to manage and process the entire quantity of waste. “The process is indigenously developed to suit Indian conditions and effectively process Indian city waste, delivered mixed or segregated to the plant. The biogas produced on digestion which is similar to natural gas quality can be used to produce electricity and the manure generated is of high quality which can be used from urban to rural spaces,” he said.

“Incorporation of Net-metering with our decentralized waste processing technology ‘Yasasu green’ deployed at Punjabi Bagh and Pali Hill, Mumbai, projects gives us an edge, as it will help easy distribution of energy being produced from decentralized waste to energy plant,” said Yashas Bhand, CEO & Co-founder, Yasasu EMS Pvt. Ltd., technology provider for Pali Hill and Delhi Project.

Bhand further said that earlier the corporations, gated communities or RWA, had to invest in additional infrastructure for using this power, but with the deployment of net metering at decentralized level, we have given a New hope for decentralized waste to energy plants and this shall increase the acceptability among people for the technology”,

The system is based on the proven bio-methanation and treating waste as source methodology as promoted under Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016 which promotes decentralized SWM plants, he said.

The plant which receives 10 tonnes of waste daily and after the process of segregation five tonnes of waste is left which further goes for further processing into decentralized bio-methanation plant based on anaerobic digestion technology. It aims at being

India’s leading decentralized waste management solution provider to construct, operate and maintain waste processing plants.

Till now, four such plants are operational in areas of Punjabi Bagh, Dwarka Sector 14, Roshan Arah Bagh and GTB Nagar under municipal corporations. Further, six more plants to be operational in Delhi by June 2019.
