The Delhi Police has detained four men, including two custodians, one security guard and the driver of a cash van, after they reported a daring theft of a cash box, containing Rs 26 lakh, from their cash van in Rajender Nagar in Central Delhi.

“We have registered a case of theft on the basis of the complaint by the cash custodian and are probing into all possible angles,” said Mandeep Singh Randhawa, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Central district said.

The incident took place on Saturday evening when three men on a motorbike stole a box containing Rs 26.17 lakh from a cash van while the occupants were replenishing an ATM near Rajinder Nagar with cash.

Police say that the custodian and the gunman were waiting outside the ATM leaving the rear door of the van  unlocked and open. That is when the three men arrived on a motorbike and took away the cash bag. The role of some of the employees of the cash delivery company is under scanner, said police.

Around 4.15 pm, cash custodian Jitender Singh informed the cops that the cash box had gone missing while he was refilling the machine of a private bank near the Bada Bazar in Old Rajender Nagar.

Singh told police that they had filled two other ATMs in Karol Bagh and were heading to Connaught Place. He had gone to the ATM with a guard, while his colleagues, Mohd Nadeem and Gaurav were waiting outside near the cash van, the driver Sanjay too had stepped out to stretch his leg when the three men stopped behind the van, entered the rear compartment and stepped out with the cash box, without anyone noticing.

Nadeem and Gaurav claimed that they were busy in a conversation and had not noticed the bikers. The CCTV footages from the bank are being scanned to identify the men.

The police official said that one of them was wearing a cap while the other two faced away from the camera to avoid being detected. The official further said that they are questioning the four members of the cash delivery company to probe an insider’s role.

“Initial probe revealed that the bikers were following the van after they had left an ATM near Karol Bagh and drove along with them for nearly two kilometers,” the official said.

They have also approached the cash delivery company to reveal details about some of their former employees and the financial history four members of the team.

Police would also question some of the family members of the four men who they suspect could be involved in the heist.
