A city court on Tuesday stayed the release of Sanjay leela Bhansali’s Ram-leela on a petition by several NGOs contending that the film hurts Hindu sentiments and the name of the film is being misused.
Issuing notices to Director Sanjay leela Bhansali and Eros group, the Additional District Judge AS Jay Chandra restrained them from releasing the film using the name Ram-leela and scheduled the next date of hearing for December 3, claimed SD Windlesh, one of the advocates for the petitioners.
A petition was filed by Ramleela committees of East Delhi alleging that the film, which was scheduled to release on November 15, had nothing to do with mythology and carried a misleading title. The word Ram-leela has Hindu sentiments attached to it. It’s considered sacred, as it is about lord Ram, but this film has got nothing to do with mythology. Hence the film won’t be released with this name as per the court’s decision,” said Windlesh.
A similar PIl was filed in the Delhi High Court last month seeking a ban on the release of the film but the court not only dismissed the petition but also fiend the petitioner for wasting the court’s time. “In the previous matter the case was dismissed due to lack of any solid evidence,” said Windlesh.
