Better lighting, police patrolling near NIFT sought

Published on:

After a safety audit conducted by students of Institute of Home Economics, University of Delhi, in association with Jagori NGO and Safetipin mobile application, the report recommended better lighting and more patrolling in and around National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

“The park opposite the campus should get better lighting and more security guards should be placed near the gates… The area in front of Institute of Home Economics needs patrolling, as there are many men, who pass lewd comments at the college girls,” said the

safety audit report published by the students.

The report has recommended that the CCTV cameras which are installed in front of the houses should be checked as most of them are not in a working condition.

“Improved security and police presence at the two public parks in the area would encourage more women to use these parks even in the evening hours,” it said.

The report also recommended pruning of the trees in the area so that they do not block the streetlights.

“The arrangement of streetlights should be done properly so that trees do not cover the source of the light leading to darkness in the area,” it said.

The safety audit conducted by final year students of BSc (Hons) Home Science from the Department of Human Development and Childhood Studies, Institute of Home Economics, University of Delhi covered four routes in two groups. The areas covered in the audit included Shahpur Jat, Sirifort Sports Complex, Gulmohar Park, Mayfair Garden, IIT Delhi, Kalu Sarai, SDA Market, Green Park and surrounding areas.

The safety audit walks were conducted in collaboration with Jagori, women’s rights NGO, and Safetipin, a mobile application that collects safety data from

across various cities in the world.

Jagori made a presentation at the Delhi Police Head Quarters on Friday

before Commissioner of Police BS Bassi and other senior officers.

The data provided by the NGO will be used in improving policing in the city and issues of improper lighting will be taken up with the civic agencies, a senior police official said.

The Delhi Police Chief said that he wants to impart self-defence training to each and every girl in the city to make them feel empowered.

His men and officers are aware of the issues pertaining to the safety and security of women. Police responds to every complaint that they receive and action is initiated to bring succor, he said.
