When it comes to sanitation and cleanliness, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) tops the chart.
According to NMDC official, the maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene of streets is done with full dedication and coordination among the workers who are assigned with the task to clean garbage by following door-to-door garbage collection procedure.
The civic body has deputed nearly 2,800 sanitation workers for the entire area falling under its jurisdiction of NDMC. It may be noted that the lutyen’s Zone being the VIP area in the national Capital is known for its cleanliness. With total area of 4.82 square kilometer, about 300 metric tonnes of garbage is produced each day.
To know about the remarkable work done by sanitation workers in NDMC area, The Pioneer spoke to PK Sharma, NDMC’s Medical Officer Health (MoH) and in-charge for the maintenance of sanitation work. “For the maintenances of hygiene in the council area, we do close monitoring from NDMC’s control room to know the locations of garbage in the area. We have GPS ‘map my trip’ installed in vehicles which tells us about the current location of the vehicular trips done by the workers by including PPP model for the cleanliness work,” Sharma.
“Field officers each day inspect the work done by sanitation worker, prepare a survey report and action is taken accordingly. We also track the information for the sanitation work by recently launched NDMC’s ‘311’ mobile application,” said Sharma.
The hygiene work includes cleanliness of roads, parks, monuments, residents of politicians, residents’ areas, and toilets in market places. Once the filth is collected every day, it is dumped into the auto-tipper from it is sent to compactors (a mechanical dustbin). There are 15 compactors and each of it can load garbage containing in five trucks. The garbage then, is send to the waste-to-energy plant based at Okhla, for the process and generation for electricity. About 30 metric tonnes of green garbage to the compost plant in Okhla for the production of bio fuels. This green waste is collected from garden and round-abouts.
The council area has 1,600 dustbins installed with a capacity of 1100 liter garbage per dustbin. While all the cleanliness work for each day is supervised by a senior worker for each locality, the trained sanitation workers who recently visited Singapore, Spain, Tokyo and other countries to learn sanitation work in abroad are following the western idea to make NDMC area ‘the best’ in terms of cleanliness and maintenance.
When asked about cleanliness of roads and corner at MCD and PWD area, the official said, “As MCD area is huge, there should be proper coordination and dedication among the MCD and PWD workers to clean up their area. Also, there are few problems going in MCD, it should be solved off quickly. There should be adequate number of staff and good monitoring system to track the work of the sanitation department.”
