A 28-year-old Bangladeshi national was arrested from the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) while trying to fly to Dubai on an Indian passport. Deputy Commissioner of Police, IGIA, Sanjay Bhatia, said the accused has been identified as Arefin Naiem.
“Arefin was caught by immigration officials on November 17 after they suspected something amiss and scrutinised his passport only to find discrepancies. Immigration officials then handed him over to us and we arrested him,” said the DCP.
The DCP said Arefin said he is a Bangladeshi national and got an Indian passport from an agent in Kolkata using forged documents. Probe is under way to nab the agent who made the fake passport.
The immigration officials suspected Naiem, so they checked his passport, which was in the name of Nayem Ghazi.
“Arefin was trying to fly to Dubai from Delhi in flight number 6E 23 on a tourist visa. They found that the passport has been procured using fake documents such as PAN and address proof and class 10th marksheet. Hence he tried to cheat the Indian Immigration authorities by fraudulently procuring fake Indian passport. We are also in possession of Arefin’s Bangladeshi passport,” said a police official, adding that Naiem has been tight-lipped about the agent.
Naiem has been booked under IPC Sections 419 (personation), 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and
471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record). He is also booked under Section 12 of the Indian Passport Act and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act and is currently remanded in police custody.
