Bassi next Info Commissioner?

Words are doing the rounds in the corridors of power in the national Capital that after retirement on February 28, 2016, or may be before that Delhi police commissioner BS Bassi may become Information Commissioner.

Sources said he had even approached Central Government seeking this job. However, The Pioneer could not authenticate the development.

If it happens, Bassi will be the second IPS from the AGMUT cadre to get the chance to serve in a commission of the Central Government, according to sources. Former police commissioner KK Paul had become the member UPSC after seeking VRS in 2007.

A 1977 batch IPS, Bassi has previously served as the Special Commissioner of Police (Administration) (2012-13), Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Director General of Police of Goa Police (2009-2011) and Inspector General of Police of Chandigarh Police (2000-2002). He became the Delhi Police Commissioner on August 1, 2013 after Neeraj Kumar, a 1976 IPS retired.

His tenure has been smooth as none of the incident in the national Capital could put him in trouble, unlike his predecessor Neeraj Kumar who had to face the brunt of public wrath in the wake of brutal December, 2012, gang rape of a paramedic girl student in a moving bus, said sources.

Moreover, the city witnessed two assembly as well as a lok Sabha elections during Bassi’s time. When communal violence in Trilokpuri erupted, Bassi was credited for controlling the situation on time.

Till now he has been involved in launching many apps. The mobile apparatus based on lost Report, Safety for Women, Police clearance Certificate, Character Verification Report and Motor Vehicle Theft Report were launched by Bassi.

The words ‘Shanti, Seva, Nayaya’ had been inscribed in the logo of the Delhi Police by Bassi, which was earlier ‘satyamave jayate’. The satyamave jayate used to appear twice on the insignia, at the top and also the bottom.

All told, he has been roundly criticised by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for taking action against several of  their MlAs, the most recent being the case against former law minister Somnath Bharti on the complaint of his wife.
