Amid controversies surrounding the Delhi Police over its handling of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) row, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi met lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Monday and briefed him about the issue.
The top cop discussed the current situation following the surfacing of five JNU students, including Umar Khalid, in the university on Sunday night.
When asked about the meeting between the Commissioner and the l-G, an official termed it as routine one.
The Delhi Police has been looking for Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya, Anant, former JNU Students’ Union president Ashutosh and Rama Naga since February 12, the day JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested in the sedition case registered over an event held on the campus to hail Parliament attack convict Azal Guru in which allegedly anti-India slogans were also raised.
It is understood that Bassi told the l-G that the final call about the matter is to be taken by the investigating officer.
A senior police official said they are exercising caution in dealing with five students accused of sedition, a day after they resurfaced at the campus, even as the university authorities were undecided on asking them to surrender before the law enforcing agency.
On their part, the students said they will not surrender as charges against them were false while Bassi asked them to join investigations and prove their innocence. Earlier in the day, Bassi said if the students were innocent, they should produce evidence.
