Baijal clears decks for appointment of mayors

Published on:

Decks for the appointment of new mayors of municipal corporations have been cleared with lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal approving the proposal sent by the three corporations.

The first meeting will be held on tentative dates for the mayoral polls for the three municipal corporations. For the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC), the proposed date is May 18, for the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) it is May 19 and for the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) it is May 22. On these dates the newly-elected councillors of all the three corporations will be administered oath of membership by a pro-term Mayor or senior councilors appointed by the l-G.

SDMC, NMC and EDMC mayors, Deputy Mayor and six member of Standing Committee from the House will be elected in first meeting of the House.

“A Mayor is supposed to be elected in the first meeting of the new House subject to l-G’s approval, who then would appoint a presiding officer and a senior officer. While the senior officer administers the oath to councillors, the

presiding officer oversees the mayoral election. The l-G, at his discretion, appoints one officer for both the posts,” a senior Corporation official said.

All the three outgoing Mayors belong to the BJP, the party which has ruled the MCD for the last 10 years. The

party, which had fielded fresh faces in the recently concluded civic polls, retained control of the three corporations by winning a massive 181 of the 270 wards.

The first MCD polls after the trifurcation were held the same year. The post of Mayor sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for reserved category, and the remaining two also being in the open category
