The Transport Department has decided to crack whip on errant auto rickshaw drivers who do not display Unique Identification (UI) number properly on their vehicles. According to an estimate by the department, around 1,600 auto rickshaws still do not possess the UI number.
The violator will have to pay a penalty of Rs200. After the December 16 gang-rape, the Transport Department has introduced a slew of measures to ensure safe travel in public transport and it was directed to display UI number prominently on autos.
In a recent meeting, in which Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami was also present, it was decided that action against errant auto riskshaw drivers will be taken. Two teams of the Enforcement Branch will be formed which will undertake an inspection drive every week.
“Till date only about 400 autos have this UI number. This number consists of an A3 sized large circular shaped sticker with one to four digit numbers on it, pasted externally as well as internally, so that even passengers can see it easily,” a senior official of the Transport Department said.
Senior officials of the Transport Department added that there are more than 900 autos plying regularly in East and North East Delhi. And, a majority of them do not have the UI number.
