Concerned with growing complaints from people against police officers not attending to their calls on mobile phones and their concerns on the social media, Police Commissioner Alok Verma has directed his officers to be more responsive during the law and order review meeting.

At a high level meeting attended by DCPs and above police officers, Verma said, “It was observed that officers do not attend to calls made by public on mobile phones. It sends a wrong message to the general public.”

“Public calls should not be left unanswered. If an officer is not available in his office, his staff officer /personal assistant should maintain a proper register and write down the name and contact number of the complainant and inform the officer on return. There should be a proper response to the each call/e-mail or twitter that is addressed to an officer. Vigilance branch may conduct some checks and it was directed to formulate a system and every possible effort should be made to address grievance of public,” he added.

There are general concern among public that police officers do not pick up calls. The Delhi Police Commissioner advised that public interface is important and every police officer will have to fix time to meet the complainants and try to resolve the grievances of the public.

“He further emphasised that it would not be acceptable in any case that the officers do not meet the complainant in spite of giving time. In case the officer is busy in law and order arrangements and is not available at the given time, the complainant who has taken appointment should be informed in advance and next time and date should be fixed for hearing and redressal of the grievenance,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity.
