The peak power demand in the national Capital on Monday recorded a slight dip than the previous day as it clocked 6,688 MW. On Sunday, the peak power demand was recorded at 6,732 MW on Sunday night.

According to sources in discoms, Delhi's peak power demand on Sunday night was 6,732 MW at 11:36 P.M. and a little after midnight, it was 6,688 MW. The highest-ever power demand in this month was on May13 when it touched 6,829 MW at 11: 25 P.M..

Giving the reason behind the increasing power demand, officials said, “Cooling load is the main reason behind the Capital city’s power load.

In fact, according to estimates, almost around 50 per cent of Delhi’s power demand in the summers is because of the cooling load due to ACs, coolers and fans. Thus, the rain had a direct bearing on the cooling load.”

“Delhi’s peak power demand in May had never crossed the 6,000 MW-mark in 2021 and 2020. In 2019, it had crossed the 6,000 MW mark only on three occasions i.e. on May 29 (6,020 MW), May 30 (6,240 MW) and May 31 (6,461 MW),” he said. “The city’s peak power demand had breached the 7,000 MW mark for the first time, peaking at 7,016 MW in 2018. This expected peak power demand of around 8,200 MW is an increase of around 285 per cent over the peak power demand of 2,879 MW in 2002,” he added.
