The ever increasing trust deficit in relationship has appeared to be the cause of a significant number of rape cases being registered in Delhi. What is more alarming that the trend is moving northwards as the statistics show that 265 rape cases on refusal of marriage has been registered in the last year as compared to 80 cases in 2012.
Following the investigation it has come to the fore that in 28 cases, victim and accused had been in live-in relationship for long. Out of total rape registered (1,559) in last year, in 261 cases it was found that alleged victim had eloped with the accused but they filed rape complaint later under the pressure of her family.
A close study of the cases registered by Delhi Police in 2013 revealed that mostly the rape cases were reported from cluster area as 1,347 cases — highest cases were reported from jhuggi clusters out of 1,559 cases in 2013. “Around 105 cases were reported in other places, while 52 cases occurred in hotel and restaurant. Thirty cases were reported in vehicles and 25 cases took place in parks. Under the circumstances the purported crime took place raised suspicion,” the officer added.
Geetanjali Kumar, a senior psychologist, said these trends show how our young generations can not accept rejection and they can go up to any extent to take “revenge”. According to the annual report of the Delhi Police released recently, 72 per cent rape cases were solved within one of the registration of case, while 11 percent cases were solved after four weeks.
“Eight per cent cases were cracked within one to two weeks and 5 per cent cases were solved in around two to three weeks. As it was found that most of the cases were outcome of personal discord, did not require further investigation and we managed to solve cases within short span of time,” police officer said, adding that four percent cases were worked out within three to four weeks.
The statistics also revealed that in 97 per cent of the rape cases reported in 2013, the crime was committed by a person known to the victim, while the crime was committed by a family member or neighbour in 40 per cent cases.
