Following the order of a city court, the Delhi Police has booked six senior doctors of Apollo Hospital for negligence, causing death of a 73-year-old man three years ago.

According to the police, Pawan Kumar Jain had been a lawyer in the Delhi High Court. “Jain's daughter Meenakshi lodged a complaint with the Sarita Vihar Police that on March 6, 2009, her father was admitted to Apollo Hospital in South-East Delhi,” said a policeman.

She alleged that Doctors Saket Goel, Vinayak Aggarwal, S Wangroo, Rajesh Chawla, Sanjeev Jasuja and S Chatterjee had not treated her father properly.

The complainant said, “My father was a patient of diabetes, hypertension and coronary artery diseases, for which he was on medication. But the staff of Apollo Hospital had stopped his cardiac medicine and immediately after that, he died due to a cardiac arrest.”

Meenakshi claimed that those doctors had not performed surgery on time and the delay resulted in the death of her father on April 1, 2009. “The doctors also forged documents and tampered with medical records. In many pages, the signature of my father was forged,” she added.

Police also refused to register a complaint. later, Meenakshi approached the court and now, after three years, the case was registered under Section 304-A, 465, 471 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code at Sarita Vihar Police Station. “We are probing the matter. We have started questioning all doctors and other hospital staff,” said a senior police officer.

The Apollo Hospital administration has denied the allegations and claimed they examined the case and found there no medical negligence. “The patient had multiple diseases, including uncontrolled diabetes, heart and kidney trouble. Appropriate treatment was provided, but the patient succumbed to his illness,” it said.
