Ambedkar Hospital's unhygienic condition adds to patients' woes

The Delhi Government’s multispecialty Ambedkar Hospital is reeling under administrative apathy with unhygienic scenario all around. Open dustbins, litter, junk, medical disposal items and even human waste can be seen at every corner of the hospital, which has become the spot for the flies and mosquitoes to breed and thus giving rise to viral infections.

Hospital authorities have turned blind to the issues of cleanliness and unhygienic situation, patients at Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital told The Pioneer on Tuesday.

The hospital lacks basic infrastructure. At gynaecology department, doubling and tripling of beds by pregnant women were seen. Moreover, patients complained that supporting staff such as nurses, on-duty guards  and other hospital staff are inhumane to them.

Runiya Devi from Vijay Vihar said, “My pregnant daughter-in-law is not receiving proper care and she is even subjected to misbehaviour by hospital staff.”

Another woman who delivered a child last month is still in the hospital waiting for her discharge despite being healthy enough. She is just being shifted from one ward to another. She also stated that the reports of ultrasound test are delivered to us after 2-3 months.

However, patients were completely satisfied by the free medicine scheme and the way doctors were consulting the patients. When visited the OPD, Vikas Kumar, a resident of Sharma Colony, said, “I appreciate the medical facilities and free medicine scheme provided in the hospital. But the basic problem here is the cleanliness issue and unhygienic condition. Hospital authorities should take action on this.”

“We are ones who create such a mess in the hospital. We don’t realise that ultimately this unclean environment is going to harm us. Every time, we blame hospital authorities for lack of cleanliness. Why don’t we keep our hospital clean and tidy,” said Annu, who hails from Azadpur area and came to hospital with her mother for treatment.
