Air quality starts deteriorating

While winter in Delhi is just one month away, air quality of national Capital has started deteriorating. On Thursday, Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) recorded the value of Particulate Matter (PM) 15 Microgram per Cubic more than safer limit.

Moreover, the National Ambient Air Quality Index (NAAQI), SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research) have marked the values of PMs as “moderate” however earlier it was “good”.

Real time ambient air quality meter at Anand Vihar was marked PM 10 value four times higher than its safer limit which is 100 µg/m3. However according to the experts, air quality in August and September months are considered good.

“Delhi climate situation plays pivotal role. Higher mass concentration of pollutants in Delhi air because of less wind speed and moderate temperature,” said an environmentalist.

DPCC has installed six monitor stations at different locations in Delhi at Anand Vihar , IGI Airport, R K Puram , Mandir Marg , Civil lines and Punjabi Bagh.

Dr Vivek Nangia, Fortis lung Centre, said during peak winter concentration of micro -particles increases. “Air pollution creates respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases and whole breathing system get affected,” said Nangia during a Press meet in Delhi.

Environmentalists and health experts in Delhi have raised an alarm on noxious air in city and said due to the presence of harmful gases, people can suffer from cancer like diseases.

“Besides burning of biomass and vehicular emissions, Industry pollution is also play pivotal role in polluting city air. The continuous and repeated exposure to air is very vulnerable,” said a health expert.
