Aiming at Olympics medals in water games

The AAP Government is to hold a three-day water sports competition from October 23 in the national Capital on a 3-KM long stretch from Palla to Wazirabad in the Yamuna.

A senior officer said the Government’s primary aim of holding the competition is not only to develop the city as a tourism hub but also prepare its citizens for various sporting competitions.

The official said the competition will be held in keying and canoe water sports. “There are about a dozen medals in Olympics for these sporting events. We want to train our people in these sports for the next Olympics.”

There are reportedly two places where these two sporting events can be held - one is in Chandigarh and the other in Kerala. While the facilities available in Chandigarh are reportedly not of international standards, the one in Kerala are far superior, said sources.

The officer said the Border Security Force personnel have started training children living around the Yamuna sporting arena in these water games. He said the Government first intends to hold the State-level competition. “After the local event, we will be holding State-level competitions. Before preparing ourselves for the Olympics, we will be holding a national competition as well.” The entire exercise will be reportedly funded by the Delhi Government.
