AIIMS suicide: Faculty seeks PM's help

Published on:

Shashi Mawar, a Scheduled Caste faculty at the college of nursing at AIIMS has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and provide her justice. Marwar was allegedly accused to have caused mental harassment to a 21-year-old nursing student, leading to her suicide in her hostel room at AIIMS in December 2014.

Recently, National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has also recommended that Mawar was a victim of caste-based harassment and discrimination at AIIMS and she was not involved in the suicide of the nursing student.

Mawar, along with Principal of College of Nursing Manju Vasta and an unknown nurse, is alleged to have caused mental harassment to a nursing student, leading to her suicide. At that time, Mawar was also holding the post of the deputy superintendent of the nursing hostel, where the student hung herself from the ceiling fan.

“In spite of reassurances from Parliamentarians and strong recommendations by NCSC in my favour, AIIMS administration didn’t move at all,” Mawar has written in a letter to the Prime Minister.

“When you have taken over as Prime Minister of India, we all are very hopeful that the atrocity against Dalit in this country will be ended. Sir, this is an appeal to you to intervene in my case and get me reinstated in my own department as also stated in the judgment of NCSC,” she said.

“From February 2015, I was posted in CNO (Chief Nursing Office) where here is no academic work. I have been selected to teach, guide research and supervise students in clinical areas. But to humiliate me, I have been forced by the administration to work with Sister Grade-II who is having different cadre and job profile,” stated Mawar in the letter.

NCSC observation said, “This is discrimination; hence the commission recommends that she be posted in her own department and report to a person senior to her so that this discrimination may be ended.”
