A 25-year-old final year student of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her hostel room on Wednesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Supriya Meena. According to hospital authorities, they received a call from Supriya’s mother Prita Meena around 11 am, who said that she had been calling up on her daughter’s cell phone, but there was no response.

The female security staff and the Deputy Security Officer were immediately informed. They rushed to Room No. 56 of girls’ hostel No. 10 only to find the door locked from inside. Security personnel forced open the door and found the girl hanging from a ceiling fan. Police was notified immediately.

“She was taken to the casualty ward where doctors found the body in rigor mortis and declared her brought dead,” said an official of AIIMS.  She was a good student and had passed her first and second professional examinations in the first attempt. However, she was unwell since 2010 and was undergoing treatment at AIIMS, the official added.

“A PCR call was received at 1.10 pm. The girl hung herself from a ceiling fan with a dupatta. The body has been sent for post-mortem. A suicide note was recovered from the spot, the details of which cannot be divulged until legal procedures are over. Investigations are underway,” said BS Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South). The students residing in the same block said that Supriya’s mother was staying with her for the past one week and had left on Wednesday evening. Sources revealed that in her suicide note she had apologised to her parents for taking the extreme step. Surpriya is a resident of Surat in Gujarat.
