In a shocking incident, an MD student studying internal medicine at the country’s premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was found dead in mysterious circumstances at his rented accommodation at Hauz Khas on Sunday.

The deceased Sarvanan Ganeshan, who hailed from Chennai, had taken admission for the medical education just ten days before.

According to sources from AIIMS, Ganeshan had pursued MBBS from a Maduari-based medical college. Sources said that the Ganeshan was an introvert and used to interact less with others.

According to police sources, the deceased was found dead at his rented house and his body was injected with the overdose of potassium chloride.

Meanwhile, Police official said that a case has been registered at Hauz Khas and investigation is on.

Sources at the AIIMS told The Pioneer that as there is lack of hostels on the campus and authorities are not doing anything to increase the hostel accommodation capacity. Such incidents of deaths and suicides could have been avoided if new students are allowed to stay in groups within the AIIMS campus.

“It can’t be postulated what happens to a student who comes from far off places to study at country’s top medical college that they take such a drastic step just after few days of the admission,” said sources at AIIMS.

Meanwhile, AIIMS spokesperson Dr Amit Gupta said, “A very unfortunate news was brought to the notice of AIIMS administration on Sunday morning about the death of junior resident Dr Sarvanan G from Tamil Nadu who had joined AIIMS recently in July. Around 3pm the body of the deceased was brought by police at AIIMS Emergency Depart where the MlC was made and the body was thereafter shifted to the Mortuary. His parents in Tamil Nadu have been informed who are learnt to be reaching Monday morning. “The AIIMS faculty and Administration is deeply mourns the sad incident and is deeply concerned about it. It will cooperate with the police in its investigations whenever necessary and asked for. The police meanwhile is conducting a probe in the case,” he said.
