A Delhi-based jeweller died after he allegedly jumped off the sixth floor from the office of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) building, near lodi Road, on Wednesday afternoon. The incident took place after the bureau had seized more than 200 Kgs of silver and over 40 Kgs gold, worth over 13 crores, which the jeweller had allegedly smuggled. While the man's wife has alleged that he was subjected to thorough interrogated, DRI has said that he was neither summoned nor arrested.
Identified as Gaurav Gupta, the businessman jumped off the building around 12.30 pm from the sixth floor of Paryavaran Bhawan in CGO complex on lodi Road.
According to the DRI officials, acting on a tip off received via mail, officers from DRI's Delhi Zonal Unit conducted searches at three premises in Shalimar Bagh area on Tuesday. During searches, the sleuths recovered around 6 Kgs of foreign marked gold, 213 Kg silver from the residence of a person.
“During further searches on Wednesday, the men again recovered 35 Kgs of gold in the door panel of the safe of one of the shops of same person. In total, 41 Kgs gold, 213 Kg silver valued at Rs 13 crore and Rs 48 lakh cash was recovered,” a senior DRI officials said.
Unfortunately, the owner of the smuggled goods, visited DRI office on Wednesday around 12pm, and jumped through the window of the visitor's room, they said. He was neither summoned nor arrested by the DRI.
“An Air Condition mechanic was also in the room. Soon as he stepped out of the room, Gupta jumped off the window. He was found lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately shifted to Safdarjung Hospital by the officials present at the CGO complex but was declared brought dead on arrival,” the official added.
However, the wife of the deceased, Stuti Gupta, has written a letter to the SHO of Shalimar Bagh to take stringent action against a DRI official Nishant and his team. The wife has also alleged that Gaurav was murdered by the said DRI officials. Meanwhile, the police have said that the deceased's body will be given to the family after a post-mortem examination.
Police and DRI officials have said that apparently Gupta was also facing some family dispute and it could be one of the reasons for the alleged suicide. However, they said that it is a subject of investigation by the police.
