After odd-even, Govt turns its focus on bicycle

After the success of odd-even scheme, the Delhi Government has decided to promote use of bicycles as a mode of transport in a big way in Delhi and is planning to form a committee to figure out the modalities.

“In the first phase, we will promote local connectivity and will encourage people to use bicycles in their neighbourhood localities, instead of using cars and bikes, for carrying out their daily chores like grocery shopping, visiting a friend, going to a barber etc. In the second and third phase, bicycle lanes will be constructed so people can use bicycles on the main roads as well. Bicycle stands will also be built at Metro stations, bus shelters and various neighbourhoods,” Transport Minister Gopal Rai said. He added that revenue collected from the prosecution of odd-even offenders will be used to subsidize bicycles. “Apart from that, other funds will also be used for the purpose to promote cycling,” he added. Rai added that a meeting with all stakeholders will be held on January 18 to analyse the data and experience collected during odd-even scheme. The committee to figure out modalities to promote cycling will also be constituted after January 18, he said.

Transport Minister also inaugurated a cycle stand near Rohini East Metro Station. The cycle stand will offer around 25 bicycles for use to the commuters. There was cycle stand at that locality which was closed in 2009.
