A 39-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at Vijay Chowk near Parliament complex on Thursday morning.

“The incident took place around 7.15 am when Ram Dayal Verma’s body was found hanging from a tree located between Rail Bhawan and the media parking centre near Vijay Chowk, close to Parliament…

An inquest has been initiated into the matter. His family members have been informed about the incident,” said DCP (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal.

“A 23-page suicide note was recovered from his possession claiming his depression to be a reason behind the act,” said a senior police officer. According to police officials, Verma hails from Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh, in his suicide note, alleged that he had lost crores of money in cricket (IPl) betting and named a few persons.

“He was suffering from depression and had earlier also tried to commit suicide,” added the officer. The Delhi Police recovered a black bag containing several documents and his railway ticket from the spot. It is understood that Verma left from MP on Wednesday afternoon after telling his wife that he was going to Delhi for a meeting, said the official.

When police called his wife to enquire about him, she asked the investigator if he was arrested for betting in Delhi, said the official.

“The wife was aware about his betting business and wanted to know if he has been arrested. His suicide note also mentions that even though he had lost money in betting earlier, it had become a habit and the loss he suffered this time was beyond repairs. We have out our teams to identify where he put his money and if he had an affiliation to a particular racket. The investigation is on,” the police officer said.
