'Afraid of lawyers, cops dragging feet'

At a time when the violence incident at Patiala House Courts has generated a massive public outcry, the Delhi Police has till date not taken any stringent action against the rioting mob. Though they have registered two FIRs but the culprits are not only cocking a snook at the law but are also indulging in protest and even being feted for their deeds.

It is being alleged that the cops are dragging their feet in this case and deliberately not taking action against lawyers as they do not want to annoy them.

According to Justice SN Dhingra (Retired), the Delhi Police is afraid of the lawyers. “There are many incidents where lawyers have thrashed police in various courts. Police in order to save its skin, have diluted the offences. One advocate was arrested in 1988 and there was strike in courts for five months. We have converted our police into mute spectators whenever advocates take law into their hands. Now, the Supreme Court and High Court must take some against it and find out that why we come to this stage,” he said.

On being asked about the actions being taken against the culprits, Senior Delhi Police official said that investigations are going on and people caught in the video are being identified. He also said that our first priority is to bring normalcy in the court premise and then the penal action will be taken.

On February 15 and 17 before the proceeding of Jawaharlal Nehru Student’s Union Kanahiya Kumar was set to begin, the journalists and students were beaten, kicked and threatened who had come to see and report the case in which he is accused of Sedition and Criminal Conspiracy. After one journalist was beaten severely, The Delhi Police took cognizance of the case and a complaint was registered followed by an FIR (First Information Report).
