After the recovery of pistol on the campus, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) expressed "deep concern" and has processed the installation of CCTV cameras at the gates of the campus, a move which was opposed by the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) earlier.

"A bag containing pistol and live cartridges were found at the North gate of the campus, while police was immediately informed to do necessary investigation, such an incident demands utmost caution and alertness from the entire JNU community....The presence of weapons inside the campus raises a grave concern about the safety and security of all residents," a statement from JNU administration said on Monday.

The JNU administration has stated that it has taken a "serious note" of such incidences as a similar incident was reported in which a gun was found in a DTC bus that plies on the campus, earlier. "Taking a serious note..the administration is in the process of installing CCTV cameras at the gates of the campus, sensitive areas, and public places inside the campus" it added. Defending its move of installing the CCTV cameras, the administration in the statement remarked on the protests, public meetings and sit ins. "Despite repeated appeals by the JNU administration, protests and public meetings have been organised by certain sections of the JNU community and outsiders have been invited by them to be a part of such protests. In order to maintain safety and security in the campus, installation of CCTVs are thus imperative," the administration stressed.

It (JNU administration) has alerted all the stakeholders in the campus to remain vigilant and cautious and also requested them to promptly inform the JNU security any unusual movement of outsiders and bags and other relevent materials lying unattended, said the administration.
