A Delhi-based theatre artiste and film actress was allegedly detained by the Delhi Police on Monday afternoon when she tried to prevent an auto rickshaw driver from being thrashed by a few unknown assailants.

Shilpi Marwaha, who recently acted in Bollywood movie Raanjhanaa also claimed that a sub-inspector Sandeep Kumar misbehaved with her and used abusive language. Marwaha works with leading theatre artist and activist Arvind Gaur. The incident took place in Azadpur area on Monday afternoon around 3 pm.

“As the Auto rickshaw, in which I was traveling, stopped at a traffic signal at Azadpur red light, a speeding Honda city car hit us from behind. Instead of apologising, the occupant of the vehicle started thrashing the auto rickshaw driver. So, I had to intervene.  Meanwhile, A PCR van reached on the spot and amazingly, he allowed the culprit to leave. When I countered, SI Sandeep Kumar threatened me to arrest for creating ruckus,” Marwaha claimed. She further alleged that the policeman also intimidated her saying that a false case will be slapped against her.

later, she was taken to Adarsh Nagar Police station where she was kept till late evening. Gaur also reached the police station as Marwaha called him. “Surprisingly, the police seized the driving license of the auto rickshaw driver and forced him to write a complaint against Marwaha,” alleged Gaur.

He further added that Marwaha had got minor injuries due to the incident. However, following the intervention of the senior police official, she was allowed to go in late evening. DCP North West P Karunakaran confirmed the incident and said an investigation has been ordered into the matter.
