Police investigations into the alleged suicide of the NGO Executive Director, Khursheed Anwar are veering around his three-page note that has been recovered from his laptop. It appears that the loss of face and self-esteem, after people started talking about his involvement in the rape of a girl from Manipur, drove him to the brink. Meanwhile, the South District police have sent a team to Manipur to record the statement of the victim. In a related development the police also questioned two friends of the victim to whom she had confessed about the incident.
Anwar had allegedly jumped from the third floor of his residential building in Vasant Kunj on Wednesday morning. Police officials investigating the case had recovered a word document file from his laptop. The note which more or less looks like a diary entry written by Anwar reveals about his thoughts and perceptions regarding the incident. It has been written in an abrupt manner having gaps in between which gives an impression that he had written it on an ‘on-off basis’. The note reflects Anwar’s mindset as he was in a state of constant flux.
Strange as it may seem but in the note Anwar has neither accepted nor denied the incident, but what has disturbed him is the fact that people have been talking about his involvement in the incident. The note also reflects on how he wanted to share his thoughts with few other people. “A few names have surfaced in the note but it is unclear if they are directly or indirectly related to the case. A technical surveillance of the laptop would be done to ascertain the date on which he had written the note,” said a police official. The note also given an insight to how he was upset as other people were talking about him and not asking him anything.
He further mentions that he had been framed by members of his NGO who had convinced the victim to approach a social activist. Anwar had invited 10 members from the NGO, including the 26-year old victim and thrown a party at his residence since the NGO had done good work. The note also disclosed the fact that Anwar wanted the people at the party to take the girl and not leave her behind. The girl had apparently thrown up after a few drinks at the party. He mentions he did not throw himself on the girl and if the girl had suffered then why did she not complain then itself.
The girl did not file the complaint directly but her friends persuaded her to video record her statement with activist Madhu Kishwar who later approached the National Commission for Women (NCW) who in turn informed the Delhi Police. The police team left the Capital on Thursday morning to meet the victim and record her statement. The police are also trying to obtain the raw footage of the victim’s statement from a news channel which ran it on air.
