Activist’s arrest attack on democracy: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal condemned the arrest of 21-year old climate activist Disha Ravi, saying that the arrest is an attack on democracy.

“Arrest of 21 yr old Disha Ravi is an unprecedented attack on Democracy. Supporting our farmers is not a crime,” Kejriwal tweeted.

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and national spokesperson Raghav Chadha on Monday said that this is not just an arrest but an extrajudicial “abduction”. “The AAP demands immediate release of Disha Ravi. The Narendra Modi government wants to scare the youth of India so that they do not raise their voice against the BJP,” he added.

“The AAP wants to appeal to all the youth of our country to get united and raise your voice against the BJP. I wonder how a government which has a massive majority is scared of a 21-year-old climate activist. The BJP ruled central government sent the Delhi police to Bangalore to arrest this young activist. The Prime Minister of our country has the opposition party “Naraz Fufi” because we protest against the government. It is unfortunate that today due to this mindset the BJP is treating the young protestors as “Naraz Fufi”," he said.

Chadha said, "The Modi government at the Centre is scared, fearful and petrified by the voice of the youth of India. Young students have been raising their voice persistently against the policies and laws implemented by the BJP government.  But the BJP does not like the youth of our country and that is why they have arrested India's daughter, a 21-year-old student and climate activist,” he said.

The AAP leader further said “The BJP cries hoarse about the Emergency and how freedom of expression was mercilessly trampled upon during that indeed dark period. In fact, several BJP leaders themselves went to jail for objecting to the suspension of fundamental rights. They exercised their democratic right to protest back in the 70s and wear their jail-time as a badge of honour. How different are they now? It would not be incorrect to say that what the BJP is doing now is far more sinister, far more insidious than what happened in 1975.”

Disha Ravi, a 22-year-old climate activist was arrested from Bengaluru recently for allegedly sharing with Greta Thunberg the "toolkit" related to the farmer's protest against the Centre's agri laws, police said on Sunday.
