ACP's suicide remains a mystery, wife critical

The alleged suicide case of a senior official posted at the Special Cell of Delhi Police has left police in shock and the investigators are still trying to figure out the reason that led him to take such a step. As of now, no clue like any suicide note has been recovered from the spot, said police.

Post-mortem was conducted at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital in Noida on Tuesday and the report is awaited, said a senior police official of Noda Police, adding that the body has been handed over to the family members of the deceased officer.

According to the sources in the Special Cell, police reached the apartment of Amit Singh — an officer of Assistant Commissioner Rank, in Noida Sector 100 — after receiving the information about the incident.

“An inquest has been taken up by Noida Police and we are cooperating with them,” informed a senior officer, adding several officials have been questioned and none of them has claimed to have noticed any change in Singh’s behaviour lately.

Meanwhile, Singh’s wife Sarita Singh — who had attempted suicide by jumping off the balcony of the 6th floor of their apartment — is still reported to be in a critical condition. She might be shifted to specialised facilities in Delhi once her condition improves, said the sources in Special Cell.

Investigators have briefed the Delhi Police about the case and so far it has emerged that on Monday night, the couple was at home with their 18-month-old daughter when the incident took place.

Singh locked himself in a room and allegedly shot himself dead with his service revolver. Singh’s wife raised an alarm and security guards rushed to his apartment. Minutes after neighbours gathered around, Singh’s wife ran towards the balcony and allegedly jumped off, the sources said.

Investigators also found blood stains on the premises of the apartment, suggesting that Singh’s wife was injured before taking the extreme step. Neighbours told police that she tried to slit her wrist before jumping off the balcony. It is also suspected that she tried to kill herself with Singh’s gun first and when it failed, she resorted to the other option.

Singh, a DANIP official, was posted as an Assistant Commissioner in the Special Cell of Delhi Police. In October 2014, Singh was the victim of a road rage incident near lodhi Estate in South Delhi. Before Special Cell, Singh was in-charge of the Preet Vihar sub-division in East Delhi.
