Mischief mongers frequently posting abusive and vulgar messages and updates on social networking are not restraining themselves from mocking the rape of five-year-old girl in East Delhi. Not just they are posting insensitive tweets; they are also hurling abuses at individuals. The insensate act by them is compelling people to deactivate their accounts.

Psychiatrists said their updates reflect their sick mindset. While stating his decision to leave tweeter on Monday, renowned journalist Rajdeep Sardesai wrote on twitter, “A journalist has only his integrity or credibility. That has been abused on this medium for too long by unknown people. Time to switch off.”

However, he further wrote, “Will continue to write in print or speak on TV. But will no longer seek twitter as medium for public debate. Had hoped to interact, failed.” Responding to atrocious and offensive updates, professor of Psychology at Delhi University Naveen Kumar said, “It brings to light how insensitive people are towards others suffering. It just shows that people are taking sensitive matters as the rape of a five year old very lightly. They are truly seemed to be lacking empathy. Social media is just a smaller reflection of the larger social picture.”

In the wake of recent rape incident of the girl, an impersonator named “@justicearnab” has tweeted, “Start Candle manufacturing Business. #ProfitableBusinessIdea.” His another message said, “I did the Root Cause Analysis of rapes and found that its all happening coz of sex. People do sex --> Birth of girl child --> Rapes.”

A noted psychiatrist Jitendra Nagpal said people who use crude and offensive language on social networking site are themselves feeling a sense of desolation. “These are people who don’t have real time interaction even with immediate family members. They there is a sense of isolation and are suffering from depression,” said adding that they take social media for granted.            SR
