If one went by the first cut-off list of the Delhi University, BSc Honours in Computer Science would appear as the most sought-after course, with a 100 per cent cut-off. However, four lists down the line, seats are still available in various colleges; even the cut-offs have come down to as low as 87 per cent in some colleges.
Computer Science is a course which usually has only limited seats and fills up immediately due to the demand. Even this year, there were hordes of applications for the course. Almost eight out of 14 colleges offering the course still have admissions open for the subject in the general category and the reserved category is open for all colleges.
“With courses like Computer Science, which have limited seats, everyone moves in a safety mode and reduce cut-offs only marginally with each list. If colleges reduce points all of a sudden, the fear of over-admitting students sets in. This is difficult to manage because of the infrastructure where more computers are needed and students are usually not accommodated,” said an official of the university.
However, cut-offs reduced rapidly in some colleges. Kalindi College has in fact brought down the cut off to 87 per cent for Science students. Even colleges like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, PGDAV and Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies came down to 90 per cent with the cut-off. The colleges which had taken out a 100 per cent cut-off for the course also managed to fill their seats only for the general category that too after drastically reducing their cut-off in the second and third list. Hansraj College is the only one that has still kept their percentage high at 98 per cent.
According to college authorities, the higher fee for the course may be one of the reasons behind the phenomena and act as deterrent. With the way the admissions in this category are going at the moment, cut-offs for it may last till the sixth list. As of now admissions under the fourth list are underway.
