If it was Congress which was trounced by the BJP in Delhi in the lok Sabha polls, AAP was given similar treatment by the saffron party. The performance of the novice party, which was contesting first time at the national level, was dismal and its candidates were far behind in the electoral race.
In Ghaziabad, AAP candidate Shazia Ilmi barely secured 89,125 votes and was positioned at the fifth place. BJP candidate General VK Singh won the parliamentary seat by a huge margin of over 5.66 lakh. The retired Indian Army Chief received a total of 7,58,113 votes while his nearest rival Congress candidate Raj Babbar, who lost his security deposit, could fetch 1,91,188 votes.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Mukul Upadhyay remained in the third place while ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Sudhan Kumar Rawat came fourth. In this BJP favoured contest, 10 other candidates could not go beyond the four figure mark. Soon after his victory, the newly elected Member of Parliament, Singh reiterated he would implement his local manifesto in the first go and would drag certain ambitious projects of national importance to his constituency.
Meanwhile, Gurgaon parliamentary seat was won by Indrajit Singh Rao of BJP, who has been winning the seat on a Congress ticket. His victory margin was 1,31,541 votes. His nearest rival was Zakir Hussain of Congress. The seat was in the limelight as senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and in-charge of Haryana State, Yogendra Yadav, was also in fray. Yadav’s performance was as poor as his party colleagues in NCR as he could get only 70,039 votes and was fourth in the tally.
Noida MlA Dr Mahesh Sharma also clinched Gautam Buddh Nagar parliamentary seat with more than 2.75 lakh votes. Sharma, a BJP candidate snatched the seat from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) by defeating UP Agro Chairman and ruling party candidate Narendra Bhati. Sharma, who had lost the seat by narrow margin last time, managed to win by riding on Modi wave and anti-incumbency of Centre as well as State. BSP’s Satish Awana secured third position. AAP candidate KP Singh lost his security deposit as he got nearly 32,000 votes only.
In Faridabad also, BJP candidate Krishanpal Singh won the seat by a margin of 3,94,547 votes. Singh defeated sitting MP and Congress nominee Avtar Singh Bhada. Poor performance of AAP also witnessed here as party candidate, Purushottam Dagar, managed fourth position with 60,949 votes only.
