AAP sticks to guns, to demand fresh polls

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would once again take to the streets to create an environment for fresh elections in the Capital. The rookie party has planned a city-wide campaign, particularly hitting out at the BJP for their “dubious” stand on Government formation.

As part of the plan to garner maximum public support, the AAP has planned a public meeting at Jantar Mantar — the place which has historically been associated to party’s roots and origin in the Jan lokpal movement — on the issue of re-election in the national Capital. To convince the people of Delhi, the AAP now aims to send across the message to the voters that the absence of an elected Government has led to severe power and water crises.

“The message will be advertised through FM radio and posters. We will also put up posters across the city. The radio campaign highlighting the “need” for polls in Delhi has already started from Thursday,” said a senior AAP leader. The party also pins hopes on getting the dissolution of the Assembly by the intervention of the Supreme Court where its petition is coming up for hearing before Constitutional Bench on August 5.

Asked what will the party do as the Union Government is reported to extend the President’s Rule by extending the Ordinance for keeping the Assembly in suspended animation for another six months, the AAP leadership told that the Assembly’s term can not be extended for another six months unless “there are compelling reasons for that.”

“Overall situation in the Capital is very conducive to holding a fresh election to the Assembly. We have already proved before the Delhi lieutenant Governor that in the current political scenario there is no other way out than dissolving the House and conducting a poll as all parties have been unable to gather the required numbers,” said senior party leader Prof. Anand Kumar.
