AAP shrugs off flyovers at Majnu Ka Tila, Metcalfe House

The AAP Government is not keen to make two flyovers at Majnu Ka Tila and Metcalfe Bhavan crossing on Ring Road to ease traffic on this stretch. The two flyover projects have been put on the back burner by the Arvind Kejriwal Government citing their superfluity. Both flyovers had been approved by Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) and the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) last year.

The flyovers are part of a larger project to make the stretch between Vikaspuri and Noida signal-free. The first phase of the project is an elevated road on a stretch of 22.1 km from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad. Work has already started on this stretch.

The second phase, which will include the two flyovers, will cover the distance between Signature Bridge in Wazirabad and Noida via RR Koli Marg flyover, Shastri Nagar flyover, ITO Chungi underpass and the Akshardham and Mayur Vihar flyovers. The red lights at Metcalfe House and Majnu Ka Tila are the only ones on this stretch.

If the flyover was constructed, these two points/ intersections would become a bottleneck for traffic. The erstwhile Sheila Dikshit Government had conceptualised these two flyovers for signal-free traffic movement on Ring Road from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad. Between Wazirabad and ITO, there are two intersections that need a flyover to make the whole stretch signal-free.
