AAP MlA attacked with eggs, stones

Newcomers at Delhi University witnessed an unsavoury incident when Alka lamba, the MlA of Aam Adami Party (AAP), was attacked with eggs on Monday morning. lamba was the president of Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) in the year 1995. This year, the AAP has formed a student political wing named Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) which organised a selfie-with-MlA campaign in order to carve a place for itself in the upcoming DUSU elections.

During the selfie-with-MlA campaign, lamba and the members of CYSS were attacked with stones and eggs. While till late evening, there was no confirmation about the attackers, the CYSS claimed that the attackers were the members of National Union Student Union (NSUI).

“CYSS is keeping a close eye on DUSU election which will be held in September this year. They want to come out as new student political wing. This attack is a political stunt performed by the CYSS members only,” said Karishma Thakur, former National Secretary of NSUI. “This is the first time that such an incident has happened on the university campus. The attackers belong to their party only,” added Thakur. A volunteer of CYSS got minor injury while protecting lamba.

However, CYSS president Anupam alleged that NSUI was behind the attack. “The stickers of NSUI were pasted in the car window from which the attackers came out,” he added.

On the other hand, members of Akhil Bhartiya Vidya Parishad (ABVP) said that the Delhi University is not a political battle field. While narrating the incident of first day, ABVP Secretary Saket Bahuguna said that student political bodies should not follow the ideology of the national political parties.

“The student political bodies are made to facilitate the students not to show the political powers or rage. ABVP is strongly condemning the unfortunate attack on a leader. The wrong message has been sent to the newcomers,” said Bhauguna.

The DUSU elections are two months away but student bodies have started the preparations. The pictures of national political leaders have been pasted on the hoardings. NSUI and CYSS have put over 15 hoardings in the radius of 1 km. Surprisingly, in hoardings, the pictures of student party leaders and party members have been replaced by the national leaders.

“The Kejriwal Government is running short of budget. Probably, they are investing the money in the making of hoardings, which cost around `2,000,” said Bahuguna. “ABVP never followed the BJP, but we follow RSS school of thought which is about cultural nationalism,” he added.

CYSS’s act was popular among the newcomers and DU administration. Many DU Senior faculties have given the indication that in coming DUSU elections, a tough competition will be seen between ABVP and CYSS.

“Monday's incident has tarnished the image of NSUI though CYSS has also not gained positive image but the act gained viewership. CYSS has played well,” a professor reacted after the incident.
