Following the directions of Delhi High Court to allot land for courts in each district to ease pressure on the six district courts, the AAP Government is in the process of allotment of land for setting up four new court complexes in the national Capital. After acquiring land from the Delhi Development Authority, the Government has finally issued allotment letters for setting up court complexes in Tikri, Yamuna Sports Complex, Shastri Park and Sector 26 of Rohini.
The letter for allotment of land for four district courts has been recommended to the Delhi High Court for final approval. It is expected that Delhi Government will incur Rs70-75 crore to pay Delhi Development Authority for land price for these four courts.
Top sources said the Delhi Development Authority has allocated 10 acre for setting up court complex in Tikri, 10,000 square metre in Yamuna Sports Complex, 4,500 Sq. m in Shastri Park and 10 acres in Rohini to Delhi Government for setting up district courts.
Once these complexes come up, it would not only ease the daily burden on the six existing district court complexes, but would also help local residents to follow up their cases effectively in their respective areas. “The Government is in the process of acquiring land for these four courts complexes,” said the sources.
There are six district court complexes operating from Saket, Tis Hazari, Dwarka, Rohini, Karkardooma and Patiala House. Earlier, the city had only two district court comples - one at Tis Hazari and the other at Patiala House. In early 1990’s, the Government had set up Karkardooma court complex to deal with cases of East Delhi. During erstwhile Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s tenure, three new court complexes were set up in Saket, Dwarka and Rohini.
The setting of the three new court complexes had led to major protests by lawyers who claimed that it would not be practically feasible for them to track and follow cases in six different district complexes. But the opening of the new court complexes had brought a major relief to the litigants all across the city.
At present, cases related to South and South East Delhi are handled in Saket district court complex, West and Nort Delhi cases are taken up in Tis Hazari, Outer Delhi cases are listed in Dwarka, North West Delhi related cases are handled in Rohini, Northeast and East Delhi in Karkardooma and the ones related to New Delhi district in Patiala House.
