A 75-year-old farmer protesting against the Centre’s agriculture laws allegedly committed suicide on Saturday morning at the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border in Ghazipur. Police have also recovered a suicide note written in Punjabi in which he stated that he was unable to bear the plight of farmers.

The farmer has been identified as Kashmir Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur. Police said he allegedly took his own life by hanging himself in a washroom at the protest site. In the suicide note Kashmir Singh also stated that his last rites should be performed by his grandchildren who are also on the Delhi-UP border here.

Meanwhile, the UP Police had taken the suicide note in its custody and they said they are verifying the facts. Singh has held the Government responsible for his suicide and in his letter stated accused the Centre of not paying attention to the farmer’s demands and reason for his suicide.

Rakesh Tikait, national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, said the farmers are deeply hurt by the incident. He said if this is the situation of the Government, then the farmer will become furious.

“Till the agricultural laws are withdrawn, the agitation of farmers will continue,” he said.

Meanwhile, after receiving information regarding the incident, the District Magistrate, Ajay Shankar Pandey, SSP Kalanidhi Naithani, ADM City SK Singh, SSP City and top officials including reached the spot.

At UP Gate, the officials interacted with the farmers leaders and the relatives of the deceased farmer and consoled the victim’s family.

However, during this time the farmers also expressed their anger to the authorities. SSP Kalanidhi Naithani said prima facie the case seems to be of suicide. “The case will be investigated. But the family refused to conduct a post-mortem from the police. At the request of family members, the body was handed over to them, with which they left for his home in Rampur,” said a senior police official.
